Homeland Security Measures Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Homeland Security Measures - Essay Example This has remarkably revolutionized the basic framework, but has created numerous security threats at the same time. Unfortunately, both the state and out of state cyber criminals are becoming more coordinated and strong, which has really put the United States government in a fix. (OUR NATIONAL INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE; AN IMMEDIATE STRATEGIC CONCERN IN NATIONAL SECURITY POLICY) According to the author of the article, the oil and gas companies seem to be the main targets for the hackers, because of their widespread businesses, which are even established in far fledge places, where contact can be made only via satellites. As a result, it becomes easier for the cyber criminals to extract private information, without the security companies knowing about it. Furthermore, the energy sector, which includes these oil and gas companies, would be affected the most if cyber-attacks were carried out at a significant scale, in the near future. Global projects, intercontinental partnerships and contractors, make the energy sector a vast industry spread over the world. Keeping in check who is accessing the data and extracting valuable information becomes a herculean task. The oil and gas companies are packed with important data, which if it gets in the wrong hands, can be have detrimental effects. Not only is there financial information to be protected, but also confidential customer information and various facts and figures. The author is accurate in his argument that the energy sector is the most vulnerable of all the other sectors and thus, a key target for cyber criminals. In today’s world, there is an ongoing energy crisis. Oil and gas companies are the main industries that contribute to the energy production in the world. The energy sector takes care of the economy, national defense and the well-being of the people. If the energy sector is attacked, then the world will be facing serious problems. U.S. owns twenty percent of the natural resources and a large num ber of oil reserves, which is not only necessary to maintain its own economy but to stabilize the economy of the world as well. Therefore, U.S. oil and gas companies are spread in almost every area of the world, and an attack on these is considerably easier than on any other company. Furthermore, cyber-criminals can gain power and dominance by getting their hands on valuable information related to these companies, as it basically controls the world’s economy. (Information Security in the Oil and Gas Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Sectors). SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It is used to control automated industrial operations on wide scale. These industrial operations include the energy sector as well. SCADA system if implemented properly can be very helpful to the companies. There will be no need for visits and monthly inspections by an official. It can make changes to the system, solve errors and reduces operational costs (Why SCADA?). How ever, it has become vital for the companies to keep the SCADA and other industrial control systems in check. This is because what these operating systems contain is private and valuable information, which at no cost can be leaked to any criminal organization. The interlinked information of U.S. national infrastructure has made it easy for criminals to extract information and cyber security has come under serious threat. In addition, there have been concerns that

The Father of Revolution Essay Example for Free

The Father of Revolution Essay I belong to the opposing group, who opposes Jose Rizal as the national hero, and affirms Andres Bonifacio, who truly owns the throne to the so-called title of National Hero which currently belongs to Jose Rizal. First of all, let me get some facts straight. His complete name is Andres Castro Bonifacio, and he was born on November 30, 1863 in Tondo, Manila and died on May 10, 1897 at a very young age of 33 in Maragondon, Cavite. Like Abraham Lincoln, his formal education was very limited because of his parents’ death when he was only 14. He was an avid reader too like Lincoln and has read numerous books like the French Revolution, Biographies of US Presidents and many others. As the eldest, he had to drop out from school in order to support his siblings. Bonifacio was able to experienced working several odd jobs such as messenger, salesman and, warehouseman. He was also a businessman selling fans and canes. He founded the revolutionary movement known as KKK and was its supreme leader which sought for independence from the Spaniards. Not known to many Filipinos, some historians regarded him as the â€Å"first president of the Philippines. Andres Bonifacio and Greogoria De Jesus were married at the historic Binondo Church in 1893. His wife, more popularly known as Aling Oriang, was the founder and the vice-president of the women’s chapter of KKK. As a member of the Katipunan, Gregoria was designated the code name â€Å"Lakambini† which is the equivalent of â€Å"goddess† or â€Å"muse† in Tagalog dialect. Andres and Gregoria had a son named Andres but died of smallpox. Bonifacio was executed in 1897 and after more than a year his wife Gregoria met Julio Nakpil, a commander of the Katipunan troops in northern Philippines. They got married in December 1898 and had 5 children. The primary objective of the establishment of KKK is to achieve independence from Spain through a revolution. On July 7, 1892, the day after Rizal’s deportation to Dapitan, Andres Bonifacio founded the KKK – Kataas-taasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Highest and Most Respected Children of the Society of the Country) As a Katipunero, a member of the secret society called KKK, Bonicafio used the pseudonym â€Å"May Pag-asa† (There’s hope). The first â€Å"Supremo† of the Katipunan, short of KKK, was Deodato Arellano, Bonicacio’s brother-in-law. The second KKK â€Å"Supremo† was Roman Basa. Although Bonifacio was the founder, he only took over as â€Å"Supremo† in 1895 and prior to holding the highest position he was the organization’s comptroller and then its fiscal. Bonifacio wrote the poem â€Å"Pag-ibig sa Lupang Tinubuan† (Love of Homeland) under the pseudonym Agapito Bagumbayan. With less than 300 KKK members in January 1896, memberships of the Katipunan soared high to more than 40,000 by August 1896 due to the publication of â€Å"Kalayaan† and membership spread out throughout Luzviminda.

Kessler’s Philosophy of Education :: Educational Educating Teaching Essays

Kessler’s Philosophy of Education The dictionary defines the word philosophy as the general principles or laws of a field of knowledge, activity, etc. I, myself define philosophy as my beliefs, values, and opinion on a subject. Specifically in this paper, the subject I will be speaking about is my philosophy of education. What is my philosophy of education you might be asking? I will answer this question as well as talk about many other aspects of education. These aspects include the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, method, and curriculum. The first aspect of education I am going to talk about is the nature of students. I agree with Rousseau that people are born innocent, neither good nor evil. I also agree with Rousseau in that a person’s environment determines whether they are good or evil. For example, if you grow up in a stable home with a family with good moral values and beliefs, then you are most likely to have those same morals and beliefs and be a good person. However, if you grow up in a family with no morals and no standards and grow up in a home of crime, then you are more likely to follow in your family’s footsteps and be an evil person. I also believe that not all people are born with the same intelligence. Everyone is different; no two people have the same intelligence. Different people can grasp certain things easier than others can. Some people are just born good at doing something while others have to work a little harder to achieve a certain goal. The nature of knowledge is either relative or absolute. I feel that the nature of knowledge is relative. I believe, as Rousseau does in that each person needs to construct his or her own knowledge rather than memorizing something. I think it is important to learn from experience, not just learn from memorizing a map, or memorizing science or geography. People need to create their own knowledge and they can do this by learning from experience. I myself always found it easier to learn from my own experiences rather than to sit and try to memorize something and then apply it.

Earthquakes :: essays research papers

Earthquakes are one of the most damaging natural disasters known to man. They have been known to destroy entire cities in their total time of 2 to 3 minutes. Most people do not know that earthquakes are common through out the entire world; they are just more powerful in places such as California and small countries in South America. The definition of earthquake is â€Å" a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust by the abrupt rupture and rebound of rocks in which elastic strain has been slowly accumulating† according to Infoseek.com.. As a consequence of continental plate movement, the Earth's surface near active faults deforms before, during and after earthquakes. Similarly, the ground surface near active volcanoes also deforms as a consequence of eruptions and volcano evolution. Crystal deformation can be observed as relative movement of points on the Earth's surface, ground tilt, ground strain, and fault slip (creep). There are five primary regions in California where continuing crustal deformation and associated seismicity indicate the most serious earthquake or volcanic hazard. Monitoring in these regions allows researchers to understand the source and characteristics of this hazard so they can attempt to minimize its effects. A fault is a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. Faults allow the blocks to move relative to each other. This movement may occur rapidly, in the form of an earthquake - or may occur slowly, in the form of creep. Faults may range in length from a few millimeters to thousands of kilometers. Most faults produce repeated displacements over geologic time. During an earthquake, the rock on one side of the fault suddenly slips with respect to the other. The fault surface can be horizontal or vertical or some arbitrary angle in between. Earth scientists use the angle of the fault with respect to the surface (known as the dip) and the direction of slip along the fault to classify faults.

Mac & Cheese Essay

The article â€Å"Why Games are Good for You† by Steven Johnson presents reasons why electronic video games are not harmful. While other people have written and talked about the harms that video games bring to young people. , Steven Johnson argues just the opposite. He says that video games have many benefits including making us smarter. Steven Johnson begins his article by describing what the critics say about video games. First, they are a great waste of time says Dr. Spock. At their worst, they promote violent responses from children. The main argument about video games is that they take away from children reading. Then the author presents the reasons that reading is so good for people. However, the author then says that a lot of the criticism about video games is because they are being judged by old standards by people who believe reading is the main way for children to learn skills. He asks the reader to think of a world where video games came before books. Then he argues that the criticisms of books would look a certain way. The criticisms are the author’s way of showing benefits of video games, like they are three-dimensional, and they have strong visual images and sound. The user uses complex motor skills to navigate them. Also, he shows that the children interact with the games and can control what ha ppens in them. Steven Johnson then shows that the arguments used against books in this made up situation are like the ones used for video games. They do not show the benefits of reading like using the imagination or the shared experience of reading the same story. The arguments against video games are limited also says the author. He says if you compare video games to books, then the games will not be judged well because the two are so different. Next, he talks again about the benefits of reading like concentration and making sense of words and meanings. After showing how reading brings many benefits, he then argues that some of the benefits of readings are found with video games. He says, â€Å"By almost all the standards we use to measure reading’s cognitive benefits—attention, memory, following threads and so on—the nonliterary popular culture has been steadily growing more challenging over the past thirty years† (485). Research is showing in the last few years that people who play video games regularly are gaining important skills. In fact, Steven Johnson argues that â€Å"Increasingly the nonliterary popular culture is honing different mental skills that are just as important as the ones exercised by reading books† (485). He provides examples of why he believes this. Steven Johnson does not agree with critics of video games who believe they are not only a waste of time for children, but can cause harm. Instead, he argues that video games provide many benefits and skills for children including motor skills, interaction with a narrative, a rich landscape of sounds and images and so forth. Other researchers are starting to agree that video games are providing some benefits. Steven Johnson believes that video games should be valued more, but he also suggests that reading is still important. The main point, though, is that parents and others should stop thinking that video games are all bad and appreciate the value they bring to the child.
